— THE MANUAL

Help.

Quick answers to the questions we hear most.

Files & limits

How big a file can I upload?
Most tools accept files up to 50 MB. Some browser-only tools (that never leave your device) can handle larger files since nothing is uploaded.
How long do you keep my files?
Files uploaded anonymously are deleted automatically after about 15 minutes. Signed-in uploads are kept about 24 hours. A published QR site is kept until you delete it. See the Data Retention Policy for the full schedule.
Do you store the file after processing?
No — the output is available for download during the retention window above, then it's gone. open-tools is not a file storage or backup service.
What if my file fails to process?
Check the error message on the tool page first — it usually explains what went wrong (unsupported format, size limit, corrupted file). If it looks like a bug, use the contact form or request-a-tool page.

Privacy

Do I need an account to use the tools?
No. Most tools work with no account and no sign-in. An optional free account adds API keys and job history.
Do you track me or show ads with trackers?
We use no third-party analytics and no advertising trackers. Any sponsored placements are static, cookie-free images — never third-party ad scripts.
Are my files processed in my browser or on your servers?
Some tools run entirely in your browser (the file never leaves your device); others upload the file for server-side processing and return the result. Each tool page notes which.
Where can I read the full privacy details?
See the Privacy Policy and Data Retention Policy under Legal — they cover exactly what we collect, why, and for how long.

Account & billing

Is open-tools free?
Yes — every tool is free to use today, with or without an account.
Are there paid plans?
Optional paid plans are coming soon (higher limits, ads removed, more retention). Nothing is billed today — see the Refund & Cancellation Policy for the terms that will apply once they launch.
How do I delete my account?
From account settings you can export a copy of your data or permanently delete your account, which removes your files, API keys, and history.
I forgot my password — what do I do?
Use the "Forgot password?" link on the sign-in page to get a reset link by email.

API & developers

Is there an API?
Yes — most tools are available over a simple HTTP API. See the API docs for endpoints, request/response shapes, and example requests.
How do I get an API key?
Create a free account, then mint a key from account settings. A key is shown once at creation, so save it somewhere safe.
What are the rate limits?
Anonymous callers get the smallest quota; a signed-in account gets a higher one; an API key gets the highest. Exact numbers are shown on your account's usage page.
Some tools need an account or API key to use — why?
Heavier, compute-intensive tools (like OCR) are gated behind a free account or API key so the service stays fast and available for everyone.
